Lancaster Fuselage markings, Dambusters Raid, May 1943
It was in 1943 on land, sea and air that the tide turned against Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Imperial Japan. On 17th May of that year the ingenious Barnes Wallis-designed 'bouncing bomb' was delivered by the RAF's 617 Squadron. The AJ-N fuselage markings are from the raid's second wave, third aircraft to deliver the bomb, piloted by Australian Les Knight, whose crew dropped their bomb with pinpoint accuracy and finally the second and crucial dam, the Eder, was bust. Together with the Möhne, breached by aircraft of the first wave, this meant that the Ruhr Valley, the industrial heartland of Germany, was flooded. From this point on no part of Hitler's war machine would be safe.
